TRANSFORMING
AFRICAN COMMUNITIES
FOR THE BENEFIT OF
OUR CHILDREN
We know that access to safe water and sanitation contributes to improved health and helps prevent the spread of infectious disease, reducing child and maternal mortality rates. We also know that women and girls are disproportionately affected by the water crisis and that access to safe water close to their homes means they can spend more time pursuing other productive activities such as education and livelihood activities instead of time-consuming chores like collecting water. Through our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme we aim to increase these opportunities that contribute to the uplifting of communities in Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Uganda.
Our WASH programme interventions are designed to:
- Save Lives
- Improve Health
- Empower Individuals
- Promote Skills Development
- Promote Education
- Increase Food Security
- Increase Livelihoods
- Develop Resilience and Stability
WASH programme interventions used are selected based on an assessment of the respective community needs as well as environmental factors. Interventions include;

Borehole Drilling and Installation of Wells
Most sites do not have electricity so a handpump is installed and in some cases a solar pump.

Rehabilitation of Wells
Some wells simply require rehabilitation to get them good as new.

Rain Water-Harvesting
A solution where drilling is not possible. This is especially useful at schools to be used in school gardening projects.

Water and Sanitation Education Training
Without water, proper sanitation and hygiene are not possible and without proper sanitation and hygiene in place, water becomes contaminated and practices result in illness. This training instills healthy and hygienic habits to protect communities from disease and death.

Alternative Solutions
In communities where water is not available close by, and no other solutions are viable, JAM provides alternative, mobile solutions such as hippo rollers or water trucking in the case of emergencies.
With all interventions, communities and their leaders are trained and equipped to ensure that their water solution is kept in working order and that hygiene practices are adhered to.
Our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene programs are tailored to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), those of No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Clean Water and Sanitation.
